About The Community Call
The Community Call was created in response to the economic disruption impacting local businesses and hourly workers across Uptown, greater Minneapolis, and the surrounding Twin Cities.
Recent disruptions have significantly affected foot traffic, staffing, and day-to-day operations for small businesses. Regardless of cause, the impact on livelihoods has been immediate and real.
The Community Call focuses on solutions: direct relief, local support, and bringing customers back into our neighborhoods.
This is a non-political, community-centered effort designed to support people and preserve the local businesses that make our communities vibrant.
About the host
Marlene Leiva is the new owner of French Meadow Bakery & Café on Lyndale Avenue, a beloved Twin Cities institution with deep roots in the community.
Stepping into ownership during a period of economic uncertainty has been extraordinarily challenging. Like many small business owners, Marlene has faced reduced foot traffic, staffing disruptions, and operational instability—at the very moment she is working to honor French Meadow’s legacy while guiding it into its next chapter.
As a new owner, navigating these disruptions has required resilience, adaptability, and deep commitment to her employees and community. The Community Call reflects Marlene’s belief that the best way forward is through collective support—neighbors helping neighbors, and local dollars staying local.
